Tamper
The espresso press: compacts the coffee in the basket for the water to pass through.
- Indicative price
- €20–80
- Capacity
- 51–58 mm
The tamper is a flat-based, usually steel-based press that compacts the ground coffee inside the filter holder's shell. A firm and leveled pill makes the water go through in a uniform way; if it is tilted or loose, the water seeks the easy way and the espresso goes unevenly.
There is no need to push with all your strength: just press firmly and straight until the coffee stops giving in. The important thing is to do it always the same and well-leveled.
- In favour: it greatly improves the espresso's constancy.
- In favour: the leveled or with the dock help to repeat.
- Against: it has to match the diameter of the basket.
- Against: the plastic one that brings many machines is hardly good.
It costs €20-80. The first is the measure: 51, 54 or 58 mm, according to your filter holder; look at it before buying. One that fits almost just, with a flat base and good weight, is enough.
Cheapest alternative: the tamper that comes with the machine, pressing carefully and checking that the coffee is leveled.
This coffee bar runs on coffee… literally. And the odd ko‑fi.
