Ruiru 11 and Batian were born in Kenya to respond to two diseases that threaten coffee trees: roya and coffee cherry disease (CBD). SL28 and SL34, the country's classic varieties, are sensitive to them.

  • Ruiru 11: presented in 1985.
  • Batian: presented in 2010.
  • Both: roya and CBD resistant.

With them, producers can grow with less treatments and less risk of losing the harvest. According to some tasters, Ruiru 11 gives a cup less bright than the SL; Batian later arrived with the intention of improving quality as well.

In practice, many Kenyan lots combine these varieties with SL28 and SL34, so it's easy that you've already tried them. In the cup they keep features of the Kenyan profile: fruit, citrus and living acidity.

Prepare them in a filter, with a clear weave or city: V60, Kalita or AeroPress.
