Maragogipe
The "elephant grains": Typica mutation discovered in Bahia (Brazil), low production and soft cup.
In the cup
- Nuts
- Caramel
Maragogipe is a natural mutation of Typica that appeared in the 1870s in Bahia, Brazil, and takes the name of the town of Maragogipe. Its most striking feature is the size of its grains, so large that in English they are called "elephant bears," elephant grains.
The plant produces little. That is why it has never been a variety of large volumes, but a curiosity that some farms maintain for their appearance and cup.
In the cup it is soft, with little acidity and a delicate profile. It does not have the intensity of its famous descendant, Pacamara, who was born by crossing it with Pacas.
- Father: Typica.
- Famous descendant: Pacamara.
- Low productivity.
If you toss at home, keep in mind that such a large grain usually takes some more time for the heat to get to the center. To prepare it, choose methods that favour sweetness: Clever Dripper, Kalita or drip coffee maker, with your own city.
